it would be a management position in a field i am familiar with and have been in for some time. odds of getting an offer for management are slim in my line current office, but the company is so new that i'm not sure how well they will do in the long run. how do you make a decision like this? its an opportunity to move way ahead or fail completely. now im in a secure position but very unhappy with my environment and in the future this company may be unsteady. what would you do?

There is a lot of risk but a lot of reward as well (especially if you hate your current situation). You have a chance to do something you enjoy and a chance to help shape a new business. Ask yourself one question: Would you invest in this business if you were approached by the owners? If the answer is yes, then go for it.

Assuming you have savings to fall back on, I'd jump at the opportunity if I were you!

I am an engineer and have worked at a number of "high tech startups." These are companies that are brand new with a chunk of investment money. The success rate is low but there have been cases in which they hit it big and everyone enjoys a huge financial reward. Another scenario is the company gets bought out by a large stable company and there is still a big financial payday. Other times, they break even but go nowhere. But, I admit, a good percentage don't make it. But still, there is a big career benfit and that is EXPERIENCE!! It looks great on a resume and makes you more marketable, puts you in position for more senior positions at established companies. A lot of people go on to better positions at large companies because they got valuable experience at the startup that you can't get at a larger company early in your career. As well, I can speak honestly about this, it's EXCITING!! So there's the significant risk the company could fail, but everyone's there to make it work. I 've often found the politics is a lot lower, decisions get made quickly and things get done fast! It's hectic but you'll LOVE IT!!

If you can handle the short term financial risk, the you'll really enjoy the experience and, eve if it fails, you'll get valuable experience that will pay off in finding your next job!

I say GO FOR IT!!

In business it's impt to take risks....
Yes it's a new company but if it takes off, you can be part of that growth.
If it fails, you have the title and experience to get you a better oppty at another job.
I took a job once just b/c it was a Manager title b/c if you want to be a Manager at any great orgzt. they are going to stress Management Experience.
Go for it....
Tip: When you start with them, maybe set aside an emergency account where a certain amount of each check will go directly into savings in case of an emergency.

Good Luck!

A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.

Rededicate yourself to your current position. Make a change in yourself. You have the power to do it!!! Find things in your current job to get excited about. Find things that motivate you. Be positive.

Pretend that you are management, what would you improve? What would you change? Endear yourself to your boss, even if he is a pain. Find out from him what his goals are for the company and discuss ways in which you can help him achieve those goals. If you help your boss move up you will go along for the ride. Help others and you will be rewarded twice over.

Stay away from the malcontents in the office and associate with the positive co-workers. Find ways to motivate your co-workers to get excited about the job. Make your workplace a pleasant place to come to everyday. That other job will look less enticing if you make your current station more appealing.

Do not accept that you have topped out in your current job. If you work hard, show interest in improving the company and dedicate yourself to personal success then you will achieve it.

Do it and you will not regret it. There is success in your future.

This is a great opportunity to advance yourself and grow. No matter what you will get that management experience. I say go for it. It seems you have nothing to lose. Its never a bad decision to leave a place you are not happy with.

Totally your decision, and I think deep down you already know what to do. If those who are in charge seem knowledgable and forthcoming then this is a great chance to help in it's success and grow with it. NO PAIN NO GAIN>

Depends on how much of a risk taker you are, but if I'm not happy somewhere it's generally time to move on.
