For many social and psychological reasons - One may be to have a sense of control over something. It could be for a sense of security. We have a nice fat attack cat! We should have fired him when he hit 13 pounds. So we pretty much have to waddle the fat thing around the house as we vacuum or do other things. So anyway some need the companionship of a seeming understanding and loving thing (pet) that cant talk back, disagree or argue. Some folks need to be liked and helpful so they rescue pets. This gives them a sense of belonging and lets them feel good about them self. Some folks also find great comfort in pets. For example the obvious are the seeing eye dogs. For others with disabilities it gives them a great sense of accomplishment to take care of a pet. It is also very therapeutic in a lot of cases where a person actually reduces stress levels and hear rates go down. Blood pressure goes down and it is a healthy thing for all. Some unfortunate folks find ways to make money from exploiting animals. Pet shops are normally fine but others who fight animals for money or other who breed pets indiscriminately do more harm then anything.
Why pets love owners. I think in some cases especially with mild disabilities if a person rescues a pet such as a dog, that dog can get very protective of that person. In other cases I think that some animals are just naturally curious and flop anywhere. I know the intelligence levels are obviously different then our. But here is a experiment or thing that I tried. It started out as a joke with my kids but here is what I did. (NOT VERY SCIENTIFIC OR CONTROLLED IN ANY WAY)
Okay - I have a black lab we got when it was a very small puppy. Now it is about 5 years old. So one day I was talking to it saying "Oh so pretty such a baby" while petting it on the head. So then I though I would say the same thing but in a loud mean voice. The dog actually looked at me like I was nuts and backed off. So then I spoke in a loving way again but I said "Oh your such a stupid dog" "Yes oh how ugly" But because I said it in a non threatening way the dog was wagging its tail and licking me all over. So maslow and others doing the thing with the bell and making the dog salivate actually proved interesting things. I am no expert nor a science major but what I observed was a conditioning I believe. And yes I love pets and no pets were harmed in my experiment. Now if I could only get my goldfish to change there own filter I would have it made.
Just my 2.5 euros worth.

Who says only humans have pets. At Singapore zoo there was a rhino that had a pet monkey. The monkey would ride around on its back & the rhino would get all protective of it if the other rhinos were mean to it. This is true!

i admire my pets greater suitable than i admire maximum folk. consisting of you. What i don't understand is human beings such as you who question animal fanatics. in case you ask me you are able to learn lots some individual who likes animals and by using watching how nicely they manage their pets. a individual who ones a puppy and treats it like gold is obviously a compassionate individual (a community you appear to be lackin in) and is likewise in all probability gentle to others. "you are able to learn the guts of a guy by using his dealings with animals" Basement Bumkin, what's your situation. So human beings like animals massive DEAL. Are they hurting every physique? No never. rather they're saving countless lives by using adopting those animals into there residences. Do you have not any heart? No soul? i'd particularly welcome yet another animal into my abode until now you... the animal would have greater useful manners and in all probability does not attack every physique in assessment to you who has accomplished not something yet attack people who care approximately different creatures besides themselves. you're fairly egocentric. we are actually not hurting every physique... so consequently you're finding out in this combat and consequently you my expensive are the single that desires to get a existence.

For company, to get them out of the house more often, our pets love us because we treat them with love and kindness, feed, walk and treat them with special things and in return they give you so much love and loyalty back and never let you down.

It's good old-fashioned cupboard love - they love you if you feed and water them! I think a lot of pets like the companionship - same as wild animals that live in packs do.

Animals such as cats and dogs were domesticated 1000's of years ago with useful purpose in mind, such as catching rats or hunting.

People mainly own them now for companionship and I think they become attactched to us because we give them board and lodgings - i.e. an easier and more comfortable life than in the wild.
