If you are sitting in the emergency exit row you should be prepped by inflight on how to evacuate, you can't open any window on an airplance you can access the emergency exit rows, and of course the front and back of the plan.
The US Federal Aviation Administration requires that the passenger should stabilise the slide and assist others. While the Canadian Authority Regulations make no mention of the slide.
US Federal Aviation Administration regulations, Part 121, Section 585,
states that airlines must not seat a person next to an exit seat who would be unable
“(ix) To stabilize an escape slide after deployment; or
(x) To assist others in getting off an escape slide;”
Their passenger information cards must contain advice and a warning
that the passenger may be called upon to,
“(8) Assess the condition of an escape slide, activate the slide, and
stabilize the slide after deployment to assist others in getting off the
Slide;”

First, keep in mind that only certain windows are designed to open, and these are usually very clearly marked. Emergency instructions that you'll find in the seat pockets of an airplane normally show the opening procedures.
Additionally, flight attendants usually review the opening procedures with all the passengers who are seated in an emergency exit row, prior to takeoff.
As far as how to open them, it varies from aircraft to aircraft, but it normally involves removing a protective cover from a handle and then pulling the handle inward. On most planes, the window falls inward and you are instructed to either toss it out the opening, or to place it on the seat.

You can not open the windows on an aircraft, the planes are equipped with emergency exit doors and you can open those when there is a need for an emergency evacuation.
