As everyone else has told you, it all depends on the car, but that isn't exactly true. It really depends on how big of a tank your car has. Whether it's a 10, 15, or 20 gallon tank. On some tanks the fuel pick up tube runs all the way to the bottom leaving about 1gallon left when empty and turning on the light at around 3gallons. Then again there are some that run to about 2-3 inches above the bottom leaving more and turning on the light at 4-5gallons.
Your owners manual should be able to tell you just how much fuel your tank holds and when the light comes on. If not ask a technician at a dealer for you car, he should know.
Good luck and hope this helps.

The amount of gas left when the light comes on depends on the vehicle. I have had gas lights come on when there is 2 gallons left and another vehicle that has a half gallon left. I would call the dealership that sells your vehicle or go to their website and see if there is a way to send them an email with your question. Let them know what kind of vehicle you have along with the year and they should be able to tell you. You can also get "tricked" if you're on a hill. The sensor may not be covered by gas if all of the gas goes to the opposite end of the tank so be careful of that.

On my 98 Chrysler Van, I know I have about 1 and one-half gallon as I have kept a mileage reading when the gas light went on. It might be a little more as I have not run out of gas yet, but varies with the vehicle to the exact gas left.

It depends on the car. For my car tho its about 3 gallons. That about gets me about 60 more miles. But I been in cars where the gas light comes on and its not that little gas pulp but a middle finger, and after 20 seconds your out of gas in the middle of nowhere. So don't push if you don't how far you got left.

Each make and model of car can be different. The best way to find out about your car is to look in the owners manual. In my work vehicle the low fuel light comes on when there are two gallons left in the tank. In my personal truck it comes on with one gallon of fuel in the tank. Hope this helps.

Like everyone else said, it depends on the car. With every car I have had, the owner's manual says the light comes on with approximately 50 miles remaining, so that would mean a little over 2 gallons.

How long is a piece of rope? Same answer, it varies by your particular vehicle. If you want to find out for sure how far you can go after it comes on, note the mileage when it does light up. Ignore it, and keep driving. When it runs out, not the mileage again. Subtract the big number from the smaller one, and that is how many miles you can go after the light comes on that time. Do it a few more times to get an average if you'd like.

In every car that I have owned, when the gas light comes on, you have two gallons left...when it is on "empty" you still have a gallon left...The best way to find out for sure is to bring a couple of gallons of gas with you (in a safe container) and drive until you literally run out of gas...note the odometer reading when the Gas light comes on, or set your tripmeter to zero.
