Once your tank is running and past the cycle, you really don't need to test often at all. The pH, hardness and the like won't change significantly in a well mantained aquarium. Once cycled, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates will be handled by the bacteria and regular water changes.

Having a test kit available is handy in case you think there is a problem, but testing an established and well maintained community tank is really a waste of time and money.

you should also test for nitrate, nitrite, hardness, and alkalinity. they make a all in one test strip. walmart Carry's these for $10 for 25 strips. and its easy to read. Then you will know what to treat your water for.
