Today? I would say Raccoon dog (they are a canid from Asia). Their fur is used to make faux fur for coats, so it is not technically fake.
Look up the articles on CNN or the humane society. There was a DNA analysis of the "fake" fur, and most of it was real.- it caused an uproar (and may department stores stopped selling untested faux fur because of it) a couple weeks ago.

Lots of animals are killed in the making of fur coats and such. To name a few, chinchillas, foxes, rabbits, and mink.
Some of the big cats like jaguars, cheetahs and some tigers have been killed for their fur too.

While I can't say for sure because historically, we don't have very accurate numbers, I would say either the beaver or the mink. The beavers were nearly exterminated in America by the early 1900s. However, with the amount of minks needed to make a coat, it may be them.
