Surrey is a separate county that wraps South and South West around London. You can get a visual by looking at the map of English counties here: http://www.recipes4us.co.uk/Cooking%20by%20Country/England%20Recipes%20Culinary%20History%20and%20Information.htm
It's also in the South East of England itself.
(I think I put South East earlier, I had a dyslexic moment, the mistake was me not knowing my right from my left, not picturing it incorrectly)

Surrey is now a separate county, although years ago the only bit of present day London was the City itself. The rest was divided up into Surrey, Kent, Middlesex etc, so much of the southern part of present day London used to be part of Surrey. It lies to the south/southwest of London and is separated by the River Thames..

It is just to the south-west of London NOT to the south east as posted earlier. The Surrey-London border runs roughly from Kingston on the western edge of London to Croydon on the southern edge.
