The feminist movement is NOT responsible for the decay of the family unit!!
The movement created more choices for women than were previously available, and as a result, many women have chosen to carry too much on their plates. Don’t blame the feminist movement for individual choices. If you want a career, have a career. If you want a family, have a family. If you want both, have both. Whatever you choose, know the consequences of your choice and accept them. Quit scapegoating the movement for your personal choices.
Has it worked out well? Susan K aptly pointed out the rights and benefits women (and society) enjoy now as a direct result of the feminist movement. Do we really want to go back to a time when women and their paychecks were the legal property of their husbands? (Yes, women worked outside the home before the feminist movement – as cooks, charwomen, craftswomen, etc. And they handed their checks over to their husbands, as the law required. Read your history books! )
In summary, I say, yes, it has worked out well, but it has created a new set of problems.

It's a good thing for women because of the freedoms gained (in the Western world) like being able to vote and work.
But as far as respect is concerned: men respect women's rights more than before. But there is less respect for them mentally.
At the same time, the feminist movement has made men feel ashamed of being male. While women's rights are important and necessary, it is also important not to dehumanize and castrate men which is what the feminist movement has done, unfortunately.
It should actually be called the White Feminist Movement because it has done little for the non-white women. White women have little compassion for the women of third world countries. The feminist movement is really only to serve the agendas of white women, not to unite all women as a whole.
My mom, who's Chinese has been treated like crap by the white women of this country all her life. There's no compassion at all. The feminist movement looks good on paper, but in practice it's something entirely different.

No, I don't think feminism improve the position of women in society at all. Because feminists aren't after equality of the 2 genders, they want to predominate against men. That's not good and in no way a peaceful solution. It is some kind of revenge for everything that women passed through for many centuries. Well these thoughts are justified in some way but is not the way to improve our everyday lives.

The advantages are that women in American society have more power than ever before. They can achive the kind of excellence in life that was once only reserved to a man. Their voice is respected more and they have the ability to live life to it's fullest.
Disadvantage is that they have less of an opportunity to be a house wife and forced the middle class to have to have two salarys to be able to get by.
either way feminism was inevitable in a modern society.

There are pros and cons. It has given some women the strength to stand up and quit enduring abuse. But it has had an adverse effect in relationships. Its a turn off to be with a woman who wants to make all the descitions without comprimise. I like a strong willed women, when it is needed, but some go overboard, and want to be the dictator. Yes, I am more reluctant to treat a woman like a lady when they want to be so manly, so to speak.

Congratulations, hilfigersocks: both for having a great screen name and for asking an intelligent question.
Given the alternatives of not being able to read and write, own property, vote, drive, have any say in the choice of your marriage partner...YES, I'd say the movement to empower women has worked out well for American women. Don't let the conservatives and reactionaries frame the debate. We are all better off with education and the right to vote.

i think it has backfired. Women are finding out that a man's world and a man's ways are not all that it's cut out to be. I think it was easier (yes sometimes monotonous) to stay at home and take care of the house and children, but now women are stressed out because now we do that and maintain a job.
In our race for equality, men are seeing us as equals and therefore don't feel like they have to treat us with the same respect as they used to (listen to those rap songs and how they talk about women). The closer we come to equal rights the more respect we are losing as ladies.

NO, it is destroying the family, which is, (if you are educated you should know this) the base of every society.... so, soon our already decadent society will crumble.

Depends how one would define success. I see lots of intelligent women making a good career for themselves but I also see a lot of mothers who don't know their kids...

If by "working out well" you mean "destroying the family," I think it's done a great job!
