I think the attempted murder charge was going too far. It was thrown out.
She is in serious trouble - I mean, she had NINE HOURS during the drive to change her mind about what she intended - but I doubt she will see years of jail time, if any. Discharge from the military, discharge from NASA (already happened), divorce (coming soon), a courtcase and probation at the very least, psychological supervision, etc. are all consequences she must accept. As is the publicity.
I don't think she's a danger to others - I don't see this happening again - so I doubt there will be a heavy penalty. Others may feel differently, and I might too as I learn more about the case. We'll see.
The most irrational acts I have ever committed were when I was deeply in love. It's scary!

People are in prison for less severe charges than this. You may be amazed on how they prefer to lock people up instead of help individuals. Many people are in prison due to non-violent crimes.
We need prisons and have to draw the line somewhere...but if you lack money to afford a good lawyer, sometimes you get a harsher punishment.

She will get a few years, perhaps, but that is about it. The charges against her are simply not enough to warrant more than that.
I agree with you in that Nowak is obviously a very troubled woman, and is in serious need of help which I hope she is able to get.

It's a matter of trust, society locks people up not so much for punishment but to keep them from hurting someone another time. So if you are going to have to watch someone from now on it's just easier to put them in one place, however in doing so society is taking a life and putting it in a bottle against a possibility as society can not asses the probability
