When I used to work in Blockbusters I saw quite a few world cinema films or arty films that just went straight to video. I can't really remember any of the names of the foreign films, but a few less known US films I enjoyed were Frailty and Requiem For a Dream. Japanese films are quite good too - if you haven't seen the battle Royale series they're quite interesting and some of the older 80's / 90's anime are quite cool as well - I was watching the latest Ghost In The Shell film the other day and that's a complete mind f**k!

Go International, man.
French, Hindi, British, Australian, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish. All have good film industries. The possabilities are endless!!! Hmmm. Are you familier with Amazon.com ? This has international pages.
Or something like Blockbuster online has a great foreign film collection, if you're a member- or if you're not, it's easy to join! Also, for Indian specific check out www.indiaplaza.com an exiting page with endless choice! Up to the minute.

Jean Cocteau's La Belle et La Bete was a great avat-garde film which broached on surrealism. Loved it. Recently, Memento was an original idea on how to structure a movie.

rubber johnny-chris cunningham (a dark dark 10 minute short film) i mean really DARK!

the royal tenebaums- all star cast but very different to what you usually get at the cinema

(this one might be tough to find) 40 years of shakin' your leg like you've got the wrong foot- a 30 minute film about a man refusing to give up his love for breakdancing and northern soul even though he has a job and a family and is well past it. you'll laugh, cry and love it forever (if you can find it)

best to search online via emule or limewire for these. failing that go down to your local record shop and ask them if they can find them for you.

also
ghost dog (feat forrest whittaker) as a hiphop gangstar living his life by the code of medieval samurai and being a hit man.

la haine (a french film meaning "the hate") about flairing race relations in inner city paris.

killing zoe (bank robbery and drug abuse)

zatoichi (blind massure/samurai)

akira (classic manga film with bizarre ending)

betty page movies (a 1920's strip artist who was the first to make public films set to amzing music of the times. nothing raunchy in it unless 1920's underwear does it for you, but amazingly cool and enthralling)

as mention before; city of god (brasillian kids/teenagers becoming gangsters in rio)

battle royale (the film about kids on an island in a kill or be killed theme) and also battle royale 2 is nearly as good.

ok the last two are big releases but you might not of heard of them equilibrium (starring christian balle, who was in empire of the sun which was another good film) and also sean of the dead (if your british you'll know and sorry about that)

enjoy
hope theres something there you havn't seen before

Donnie Darko is really cool - but I watched something a while ago I think it was called Shallow Ground which was really freaky.
It had this guy who was like an amalgamation of all the wrong done in the world or something and he was made up of blood.

Do not know what it's called but it was Japanese/Chinese school class which was send on a "school trip" but actually it was punishment for not behaving and they were sent on an island, everyone got one weapon and they had 3 days to kill each other, the only survivor in the end was allowed to return home. It was pretty creepy.

Subtitled animation called Casshern, totally different to anything else I've ever seen! In fact I still can't decide if I like it or not but it's worth a watch!
