I am 18 and I have been having migraines monthly since I was about 13. They usually aren't too bad but on Monday and Tuesday I had the worst migraine ever!!! (not being able to move at ALL, vomiting, the whole nine yards) Yesterday and today I have been so dizzy that I havent been able to get out of bed. Its frustrating and I'm worried that there might be something else wrong. My mom is going to make an appointment with the neurologist this week but I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Is there anything that I can do in the meantime???

side notes:
my doctor wants to put me on birth control but my parents are SO against it.

I also felt sick last wed, thurs and fri.

What do you eat?

I began to get my migraines when I was about 13. I would get dizzy, then vomit, then the pounding came. All I could do was take tylenol and go to sleep.

It wasn't until I was in my 20's that I found a reason why I was getting them..... it was in the foods and drinks I was eating and drinking.

I'm allergic to Aspartame!

Do you drink diet pop? It probably has Aspartame in it!!!!

Do you drink coffee? If so, do you put Nutra Sweet in it? That's Aspartame!

Do you take those kids sweetened vitamins? They have Aspartame in them!

A lot of candies (including gum) have Aspartame in them!

Do you like to drink that flavored water? They have Aspartame in them!

Aspartame causes migraines and has been associated with seizures. http://www.newstarget.com/008797.html

I suggest you check your diet for a while and see if that lowers the amount of migraines you get. READ INGREDIENTS on the foods(sweetened) you eat. Stay away from the Aspartame. If that doesn't work, then move on to another possibility. But for many people, Aspartame is the culprit.

I have 5 kids now and one of them has started getting migraines. The first one he got I recognized it right away (which no one did for me) and he had eaten something with Aspartame. The next time he got one, it was the same thing. At that time, we didn't know the sweetened kids vitamins had Aspartame.

welp, first off your doctor knows more about your hormones and what may help regulate them than your parents do. It may be because you are catholic that they are so against it, in which case it would be tough to convince them otherwise, but the truth is that if you are 18 years old, you are allowed to make your own choices. Many women begin taking birth control to regulate their periods and their hormones, and if your doctor thinks it may help, then I wouldnt coulnt it out. You should also ask your doctor about taking a prescriptions migraine medicine. I had terrible migraines forever, and tried taking care of them with Excedrin Migraine, which did help, but after a while it was no real use. I began taking prescription migraine medicine, and after a while stopped getting migraines. I would say, start with the Excedrin Migraine, if that doesnt work, talk to your doctor again and see if he still suggests birth control and ask why. If that doesnt work, or possibly at the same time, inform him of your migraine troubles and see if he can prescribe you something specifically for migraine headaches. It isnt worth not getting the help you need because your parents dont like it. Your 18 now, so do what is best for you. Make a decision and then explain it to your parents. If they dont understant, then they arent doing their job. Good Luck!

Wow, kinda sounds like there's something more going on there. When I get migraines, the pain is so intense I feel like dying too. Any light hurts my head soooo much worse. Even just looking at something and having to focus makes it worse. And my head hurts so bad that I actually become nauseated. Any noise at all, even the sound of another's voice, feels like someone is stabbing me in the temple. The only thing I can do to deal with the pain is go to my room, lay down, turn off the lights and make sure my house is completely silent and fall asleep and pray to God that it's gone when I wake up. They're horrible!!! I don't get them very often anymore, maybe once every couple of months. But when I was a teenager it seemed like I got them once every week or two.

A good neurologist will try other drugs . I tried three including the one you are on and Zomig nasal spray is the only one that has helped-I have TMJ that can't be corrected but only because of other health problems i have-You may have this as it is a very common reason for migraines you may want to talk to your neurologist about this possible reason most of the time it is easy to correct-Good Luck and remember find the cause and cure the illness-tell your doctors that you are more interested in finding the cause than just trreating thesymptoms Oh TMJ is a disk in your jaw becoming dislocated and you may have no other symptoms but the migraines

I feel your pain and I am sorry. I get migraines all the time with all the symptoms from sensitivity from light to throwing up. It is terrible how you have to just lay in a dark room and wait it out for hours sometimes. I used Excedrin Migraine and it is true you can get used to it, so it loses its effectiveness after a while.

I had migraines too when I was younger and they were related to my hormone levels changing. My mom would not let me go on the pill either for it. Mine were so bad I had to go into the er for shots of demerol and visterelI. t was realated to my cycle and it sounds like yours is too.
Let me first say this, I have 2 daughters. If they develop this condition and taking birth control pills will help to relieve the horriffic pain and all that goes with it, I would want to try anything to help the pain and I would not be looking for a brain toumor or other nurological condition because I am afraid my girls will have sex. I would be thanking God that there is treatment for them and bless thoes birth control pills like they are mana from heaven!
My mom was a good catholic nurse and would have rather seen me suffer than put me on the pill because of her own fears.
My oldest is 12 and she has migraines with her periods. They are not severe but if it goes down that road I will provide her with the care she needs. That is my job. I am her mother and she is 12. As for you....know your rights. If you want to be on the pill call your dr and talk to him or her or get another one. You are 18 years old and old enough to take care of this on your own. I am sorry that you may have to do that. Your body belongs to you...not your mom and dad.
All the best!!!

There are many risk factors associated with migraine. These include anxiety, fatigue, watching television and computer screens, loud noises, flickering lights (e.g strobe lights), and certain foods such as cheese, chocolate and alcholic beverages. You can also try bed rest in a quiet, dark room and sleep. I am a second year nursing student and this was one of the topics which we did in class. I wish you much better.

I suffered terrible migraines for years, they quit when I bought a farm, got out of the city, and worked outside a lot.
Sleep, limited coffee, no chocolate, and a good chiropractor also helped.

Are you stressing about something? You are at the age of several stressful issues. Get rid of your stress

I know that people think Chiroprators are quacks, but they can really help. Sometimes just stress will cause your neck and back muscles to tighten up and get your spine pushed out of whack which causes pain in all kinds of places, including migraines. If you eliminate the medical, neurological reasons and continue to have them, I suggest you go to a board certified Chiropractor and see if he can help you. He can find out where the pinched nerve or the tensed muscle is that is causing the pain, put it back in place thus treating the REASON you are in pain. Pain killers treat the SYMPTOM...Chiropractors treat the CAUSE. It worked for me and my family..Good luck.
