I'm a U.S. citizen and I'm going to be taking a trip to Mexico and I need to know what documentation is needed at the border to make it there and back.

If you are only crossing the border you don't need to register your car .... beyond Kilometer 21 you do. The car has to be paid for with no lien holder on the registration - or have notarized permission from the lien holder. You also need a credit card and Tourist visa to register the car.

Trips along the border of less than 72 hours don't require a visa. It's not a good idea to drive in Mexico without Mexican insurance but it's not required. Without a passport you need a notarized copy of your birth certificate and drivers licence.

Thats about it

You do not need passports for car travel into Mexico, the new regulations only apply to air travel. Passports won't be required until January 2008. I would say that both your drivers license and birth certificate will do. For more information you can go to the Customs and Border Patrol website: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/

Hope this helps and have a great trip!

Passports for all involved in travel, car insurance, both Mexican and US, original birth certificates for all minors,
notarized permission from (other parent, if both natural parents are not there) and lots of prayers. Avoid nite drivig
be calm, and lots of dinero, of course. Mimi

A valid drivers license with your photo is good. I would also bring your birth certificate. If you aren't the driver and don't have a license, a photo ID is needed with the birth certificate.
