Hot water on the label first, if possible. Label should come off easy after 2-3 minutes of hot water. If that doesn't work...
Finger nail polish remover works great. Get one corner peeled back and use a cotton ball soaked with polish remover. Pull on the corner of the label as you push the cotton ball toward it. This will dissolve the glue as your peeling the label back.

If it's on a hard surface (not clothing), olive oil! Rub some on the label, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then you should be able to rub it off with your fingers.
You can remove the oily residue with a little bit of all-purpose spray cleaner.

I use something called Goo Gone. It's a yellow liquid that comes in a little plastic bottle, and it's not expensive.

Goo Gone. ( found at most stores, wal mart, target, walgreens and almost every auto parts store) It is wonderful for removing labels, tree sap, glue, etc...etc... also, if all else fails you can use kerosene or gas. just make sure you wash the item VERY WELL afterward.
