It begins with an "Induction" in which Christopher Sly, a drunken beggar, is convinced into thinking he is a lord, for whose benefit a play is about to be put on. The story of Kate and Petruchio follows as the "play within a play" that Sly watches.

You might also want to know that The Taming of the Shrew was turned into a musical called Kiss Me Kate which was also a play within a play -- the "backstage" story of the cast of the show during the performance of the play.

I am bad with names but I remember the story well, so bear with me. The main guy (the one that marries the shrew) is the "Director". He tells everyone what to do. Each person plays his or her part accordingly. The end-result is that he not only marries the shrew but turns her into a good and kind woman.

Because the plot has many of the characters do something they normally wouldn't do, the characters are acting as if they are someone else as well. By the way, if you've seen 10 Things I Hate About You you will know what I'm talking about, apparently it is somewhat based on The Shrew.

'COZ THE STORY INVOLVES THE TURNING OF THE SHREW INTO A GENEROUS WOMAN BY THE VARIOUS CHARACTERS OF THE PLAY I.E. HER HUSBAND, HIS SERVANTS ETC. WHO PLAY A ROLE EACH WITHIN THE PLAY.
