The answers given so far are mostly correct, based on the meaning of the expression you are asking about, but I will add a short commentary. "Ignorance is bliss" is not really true. It might be more accurate to point out the limited nature of this expression by saying "Ignorance of some things can help you feel better about certain things for a limited period of time." But in the long run, and speaking more generally, I think that reality is this: "Ignorance is the ultimate source of human suffering." If people truly understood the nature of our holistic, interconnected existence they generally could not bring themselves to harm others, and they would want to help others as much as possible. Basically, without ignorance, we would stop intentionally hurting each other, so the overall level of suffering in the world would be vastly reduced (and possibly eliminated completely if the idea of karma it true).

Bottom line: Ignorance may be blissful form some people at certain times, but this bliss is generally achieved at the expense of someone else's misery – or perhaps at the expense of your own misery at some later time.

So WHY is ignorance blissful? Because the delusional nature of ignorance temporarily masks the suffering that our selfish actions cause.

"Ignorance is bliss"

I heared this saying before, but sayings are categorical, meaning they do not have to be absolutely right, though there is wisdom involved in the saying; may be based on humanity long experience.

The above explanation forces me to say that Ignorance is not relative in general, but could be a bliss in particular. Some particular situations occur and ignorance could be particularly a bliss in relation thereto.

In general and on the long run, consequences of ignorance are devastating; not a bliss at all. Ignorance in Latin means NOT KNOWING; therefore it is not an offensive word. Nevertheless, it is also said: "Knowledge is virtue". Judging by the principle of opposites, ignorance would then be a SIN.

I prefer KNOWLEDGE to IGNORANCE, no matter what.

Ignorance is not knowing, plain and simple. If you don't know, then you can do thins that are wrong, and never know they are wrong. You cannot be held accountable for your actions because you do not know the difference between right and wrong.
If you aren't accountable, then you have nothing to be sorry about....you don't know so you have nothing to regret...isn't that bliss?
Look at recent history. There were tribes in the Amazon, ignorant of the world outside...they were happy, living life the way they knew, and teaching their children the same thing. then they were "discovered" and the outside world brought to them. Now? They aren't happy...they are worried..they can't understand that world, they can't keep up with that world...everything they thought they knew, every way they lived, is now "wrong" and they are miserable. They were ignorant and happy...now, they are being educated and are unhappy.

Ignorance can cause major tragedies... for instance if one gets heart attack and the companion doesn't know of the revival methods.

It is only ignorance of unwanted knowledge that can be at times a bliss if such knowledge causes unnecessary pain or worries... for example if the mother doesn't know that the son spent a night in the lock-up due to mistaken identity.

Ignorance is the absence of knowledge. It can also be the lack of a desire to gain knowledge. And ignorance is bliss because most people don't accept their ignorance. In the abscence of knowledge, most people use their imagination to delude themselves and fill in the gaps in their thought process, and the filler material is usually pleasant and optimistic.

It is mostly said in the circumstance that your life is more difficult because of the knowledge of the way things are: that life isn't fair. In the story of Adam and Eve, their nakedness (and relationship with God) was bliss before they ate from the tree of knowledge. In other words, innocence is lost at the moment of discovery of pain. In the words of the Furious 5, "A child is born with no state of mind. Blind to the ways of mankind."
Conversely, we need pain to survive. We're born vulnerable, but with the intellect to adapt and persevere.

ignorance is bliss because when you know about some things then it may make you mad or sad. So, if your ignorant(properly defined as unknowing) then your happy and full of bliss because you know of nothing that would make you unhappy.

If you have to ask - Don't!
When you know someone is hurting, it destroys your feeling that all is right with the world. That is where bliss ends.

Who says? Bliss is knowing truth and knowing you're doing what is right. Also helping others to know truth.
