What I'm about to say is a very unlikely to happen, but its what I would like to see.

I would like to see full autonomy given to the House of Commons for English issues, the Scottish Parliament for Scottish issues, The Welsh assembly for Welsh Issues and Stormont for N.Irish issues. But here's the twist - All of these would have autonomy as a lower house, and a 100% elected upper house in Westminster (former House of Lords) would deal with UK wide issues and oversee all four of the lower houses.

It would solve all the arguments about nationally unrepresentative government, while maintaining the UK as a political entity.

Why not. If you have the time then go for it. The expenses will cover your basics. The problem is this is about control. House of Commons will love to change the law so the upper house has little power. Then they can do what they like and no one will stop them. If the powers are given to the upper house to protect us from the idiots in the lower house fine. That will not happen so its carte blanche for any laws they want.

I have often wondered why they cannot split the house of commons in two and one half legislates and the other investigates (or whatever the house of lords do..that is so essential - but I honestly have no idea about)..and then they swap jobs each year..

It would save a terrific amount of cash, and would only require one election.

It should just be renamed the Senate or something and keep it small at about 100 rather than the 100's in there presently wasting taxpayers money. And everyday joe public should be allowed to stand for election to it.

The House of Lords while based loosely on the party system, has greater freedom from the party whips. Most are not professional politicians but experts from a wide and varied cross-section of society. They are the ultimate guarantors of our freedom, get rid of these and professional politicians will replace them, and even more of our freedoms will disappear.

It was a very corrupt system, and I've never been happy with it. Glad there's going to be a change, although no doubt it'll still be unfair.
