My automatic transmission for my 1993 chrysler daytona will no longer shift into gear.

I was driving, and everything was normal. I came to a stop light, stopped, and then when I started moving again, the car would not shift out of 1st gear (was going 30km/h at 5 RPM). Stopped the car, put into park, and now it won't shift into any gear.

Park works, and holds the car in place, and when I try to put the car into any gear, the transmission moves out of park, and the car will roll. Car will not go into reverse either.

When I got the car towed, there was a puddle of fluid under the car (reddish black almost).

Engine is running fine, car starts without a problem.

My main question is, could this be an easy and cheap fix (if so, what do you think the problem is), or does this sound like I will require a new transmission?

Thanks for your help.

If the transmission fluid has been lost because of a leak then drive will also be lost, find out why the fluid leaked,( maybe a gasket), rectify this then try more fluid, if the gearbox still wont work then I am sorry to say, its a new transmission.

You may get lucky but without seeing it it's too hard to tell.

My guess is that one of your tranny lines burst. This caused a leak. That would explain the loss of drive gears/loss of shifting, you need that fluid pressure to shift.

Hopefully you shut the car off soon enough and didn't try to drive it much. If that's the case, it could be as cheap as replacing a hose and re-filling the tranny with fluid.

I hope you have an honest shop looking at it - otherwise they might say "time to rebuild" even before testing it out.

Do you ever check the level of your transmission fluid when you check the engine oil level in your regular inspections under the hood just to be sure that everything is cocher?
I take it you don't didn't or ever had done so.

(The car was the replacement of the horse when they first came out-----so basically, you never fed, gave water to, checked the legs and feet for breakage/missing horseshoes, or checked to see if it was getting sick ......................you just always got on the saddle and said "giddyup".
Would that be about right? Your horsey died as you rode it into the ground).

You probably ran out of tranny fluid and burned up the tranny. The car is the replacement of the horse, but nothing was said that you didn't have to take care of it. You do.

it sounds like you ended up ruining ure trans. To check see where the leak is. oan gasket or trans cooler line or if its leakingo out of the input seal by the engine. but seeing that you said the trans fluid was reddish black you probly didnt relize what was happen and burnt the bands that are in the tranny itself and the only way to fix it is to get a new trans or used. but i fill it up and see if it still moves forward and reverse. if its still move you can still be lucky by fixing the leak and having it flushed out but either way good luck

Sounds like you ran it out of fluid. You will likely need a new transmission. On a vehicle that old, that can be cost prohibitive. I would suggest contacting a salvage yard about a used one, or just go ahead and get a new(er) car. Sorry I didn't have better news....

well, a puddle of tranny fluid, means a leak some where. tranny will not work at all if very low on fluid. you have to look underneath to see where the fluid leaked from. could be a rusted out sump pan. or most likely a tranny coolant line that has rubbed somewhere. that would not be expensive.

first of all check the hydrolic oil of the gear coz as i think this reddish black it is from gear box.
make it full and make the gear on the drive and hold on the break paddle then see the reverse. before all check the battery.
but my better advice to you bring a mechanics to repair this problem and i hope it will be simple.
