A graphic designer is someone who creates something visual to meet a brief (a set of goals). They communicate visually to convey an idea (the brief).
This can range from designing web-sites, cd-roms, dvd screens (new media) to typography, packaging, letterheads, advertising, signage, corporate identity, etc (print based work). This is mostly done on a computer (I'm sure there are some traditionalists using old techniques!), the majority of the work is created using the industrial standard programs; Photoshop, Quark, InDesign, Illustrator, Flash and Dreamweaver. Therefore computer skills are needed.
In order to become a graphic designer you don't necessarily have to go to college, if you show a good deal of talent are prepared to work you're way up. However, going to college enables you to experiment and decide what area of design interests you, what you enjoy and what you are good at.
Have a look at Richard Hollis' book for Thames & Hudson called Graphic Design - A Concise History. It's a good place to start.
They can get well paid (depending how good you are and what area you work in) and it can be immensely rewarding, but like any job, it has it's ups and downs!

Think of advertising. Signs, banners, posters and logos. You can then stem from these things even more to what you specialize in. it does not have to be black and white they are grey areas that you can go into. One example is window paintings for advertising. You see this mostly at christmas time, businesses have their windows decorated and painted.
Graphics is for what you are making basically art but not in traditional form( paintings, sketches you hang). Designer is because you work with companies to design the product from size to color font you help them express their intent or purpose. You dont even tecnically need to go to school for it. You can do it on your own. Computer classes are more of a benifit than art school. I have done it without either, looking back the information on different computer programs would have made things easier.
Hope this answeres your question. Have a good day!

A graphic designer is one who designs any posters, or banners or, as put in plain words, anything that potrays a product or individual. This may include design of movie posters, banner ads, etc. This person may take cares of minute details like what the background color may be, what various textures may be, or how well to place various components in the given space to create a visually appealing scene.

A graphic Designer!!! is a artist who works on any project that consists of designing pretty much everything you see... most graphic designers are illustrators aswell...
logos and corporate identity is a famous label for what a graphic designer does... but it consists of everything and anything that needs an advert/ image/ slogan...
Ive been trained in graphic design, but also learned
photography and multimedia alongside it,
i knew i wanted to work for myself so that was my aim. and now i can do whole projects alone.
photography. design. and website design ect.
it pays me ok money... compaired to what you earn in a studio its not as much...
it takes time to build up your contacts and clients and you have to be passionate about it to succeed in graphics. (in my view) :)
