I decided a while ago to try to avoid (complete avoidance being virtually impossible) buying US goods in a unilateral protest against the continued illegal and immoral detention of prisoners, without trial, at Guantanamo Bay. My theory is that a weakened US economy would reduce the Reopublican's chances of getting re-elected and hence maybe result in Guantanamo being shut down. Also, if Americans see that foreign protests against Guantanamo are hurting their economy, they are more likely to vote or protest or act in such a way so that it gets shut down.

I may only be able to make a small difference by myself, but is this the right thing to do? Would it be right to promote such a boycott so that others might join it? It seems such action is one of the few ways foreigners could have a real influence whilst acting within the law? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Norm, English was brought to America from Europe. It is not your language. That is reinforced by natioally the USA has no offical language.

If you would like to start a grass roots movement go for it. Fight for what you believe in, and you may be able to convince others to follow suit.

It isn't overly difficult to boycott American goods, almost everything is made overseas these days anyhow.

You have the freedom to boycott anything you see fit to, that is what freedom is about. Go ahead, you may not have a great impact however at least you are doing something you believe in. A feat which few of us can claim.

If it makes you feel good then all the more to you, but surely you must know it's not a very meaningful gesture. If you really felt strongly, you might take a more activist role.

I am going to make a point to purchase something made in the USA today as a small offset to your silly little boycot. I might even go to the club gitmo gear store at https://members.premiereinteractive.com/store/28566/41841.html . Anyone care to join me?

Boycott US goods? If you speak English, you SPEAK OUR language. Try boycotting English, the Internet, the WORLD itself.

The World is Ours.

Novus Ordo Mundi!

Ah - so you are going to boycott American goods based on enemy propaganda, outright lies and rumor.

Instead of listening to propaganda - why don't you pay attention to what the European Union human rights investigator determined about Gitmo after he inspected conditions there? (Or are you one of those people who refuse to listen to anybody who is not bashing the US?)

What a first class idiot . Your protest would be better directed at allowing terrorists to train in the east and come to the west to blow us up. Don't you understand these people are detained to prevent them organising the killing of us infidels . In times of war , which is evident by the proliferation of mad misguided Islamists, extreme measures to protect the population of our countries is a necessity . your view is bordering on subversive treachery.
