To get an accurate result you need to wait 19 days. Sperm can live for 5 days and then it takes 2 weeks after ovulation for the test to be accurate--so 19 days if your period doesn't start in the meantime.

If you do not chart or monitor your fertility in any way, and you think you may have conceived, you should wait 19 days (or longer) after having sex to test. Why 19?! Sperm can live approximately 5 days in the proper environment; if the sperm managed to live until you popped an egg, the actual conception could have taken place several days after the sex act that got the sperm there. To make sure you're not testing too early, assume the sperm had very long lives (5 days is considered a very long sperm life) and that conception occurred then. Then allow 14 days for the embryo to implant and develop enough hCG to show up on a pregnancy test (96% of pregnant women will test positive by then.)

At least 10 days and that is only if you know when you ovulated and that is the day you had sex on. " weeks would be better. Or it would be even better to wait until your next period is due until you test. This is when you will get a more accurate result. If you test too early you could get a false negative as there would not be enough hcg in your system for the test to detect.

The best time to get an accurate result is to do a test when you are late with your period. A week is way too soon.

with a first response test 5 days before your period is due, with the cheaper tests then a week or two after you missed your period.

I think sperm takes a week to cruise up to the egg, but that sex ed class was a long time ago.

I would wait a few weeks or until you think you are having symptoms.
