Life is Beautiful. It is a story with everything- love, tragedy, comedy, magic and hope. Prejudice and war.

The main character explodes onto the screen. He is larger than life and totally enchanting. The first half is the triumph. Love winning out.

The second half is the tragedy of the holocaust. But rather than some depressing ordeal the story is of hope. Of moments of true human dignity and defiance. Of a little boy convinced into thinking they are in some elaborate game by his father.

And in the end something terrible happens but something even more wonderful happens. The ultimate message is the power of hope, and love and the triumph of the human spirit.

I have watched and critiqued countless movies. Nothing comes close to this one.

Plus it was a true story and in literary circles was thought by many as the best film of a decade.

I have written essays for a local paper about my favorite movies of various types and my favorite stars. By category, I pick: German- Aguirre der Zorn Gottes(1972); Chinese sexy comedy- Girl with the Long Hair (1975); Film noir- Payback (1999); Revenge tale- The Count of Monte Cristo (1961 of 11 versions); Ghost tale- A Chinese Ghost Story(1987, Hong Kong); Horror film- Dangerous Seductress(1992, Indonesia), Girls & Guns- Zero Woman 3 (1996, Japan), Comedy Kung Fu- City Hunter(1992, Hong Kong). To answer why takes a while, so I'll just say that lovely Wang Tsu-Hsien is in the ghost and comedy kung fu, sexy Amy Weber is nude in the horror film, sexy Tsen Hsak-Yi is often nude in the sexy comedy and Kumiko Takeda the world's most beautiful woman is in the girls & guns film. It takes a while to tell why I like the stories...but I like almost any movie the girls listed are in.

That is a very direct question and hard to answer without saying there are several things to think about when you have to pick one. Do I pick a movie because of the ability of the actors, the music, the cinematography, costume, historical accuracy , (i guess that's how we ended up with the Oscars)or do I base my pick of what movies I actually have watched over and over. Hands down it would have to be .............
THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES winner of 7 Academy Awards including BEST PICTURE in 1947. The struggle of three American service men returning home after wwll and trying to fit back into society.

There are a lot of movies I really like but my all time favorite is Casablanca . Great acting, good storyline, terrific actors (Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Peter Lorre, etc.). The movie is a timeless classic.
