What do you do with them?

Some people like to cover (or partly cover) them with decorative polymer clay --then bake, and use them for all the same things mentioned already.
The clay can be used in sheets which are fitted over all or part of the gourd, or molded or sculpted or textured clay shapes can be glued onto the gourds as embellishment.

If you want to see some examples of gourds used with polymer clay (and some nifty gourds anyway), check out this page at my site:

...once there, click on the sub-category called GOURDS & Twigs, Nuts, Cork (...under the WOOD category)

It's one of my favorite hobbies! What you do with them depends on the type of gourd you have. I make birdhouses, painted characters ie; snowmen, santas, ghosts, dolls, etc....
I also use parts and pieces to make jewelry, hair accessories, key chains, etc.... You can make bowls, trinket boxes, spoons, purses, etc...
Gourds are a versatile medium to work with and also a renewable resource.
