she travelled a total of 4 miles north and 6 miles east. It forms a right triangle with the starting point, so use the pythagorean theorem....

sq root of 6*6 + 4*4 = 7.21 miles

Travel distance is 4 miles north and 6 miles east. The order in which these distances were travelled doesn't matter, since you just need to find the distance between where she started and where she ended. This distance is like the hypotenuse of a triangle, and the distances east and north will give you the measurements of the legs of the triangle.

Total distance from start is D
Using the Pythagorean Theorem, we can find D.
D² = [(4)² + (6) ²] = (16 + 36) = 52

D = √52= 7.2 miles

Hope that helps ;)

North
1 mile + 3 miles = 4 miles

East
2 miles + 4 miles = 6 miles

Using Pythagoras' Theorem, you can calculate the distances

....__6___
....|.........../
4..|......../ X
....|...../
....|../

X^2 = 4^2 + 6^2
= 16 + 36 = 52
X = (52)^(1/2) = 7.211 miles

Learn the method and apply it in all your geometry maths. Practice make perfect

6 miles, basically she has travelled north 4miles and east 6miles. this means she has gone in a box 4*6 from the bottom left corner to the to right corner, this distance would be 6

Mama... got careless;

The equation should be sqrt [16 + 36] = sqrt[52] = 2sqrt[13]

u have to do phethagorean theory twice

d^2=1+4
then d1=sqrt(5)

d^2= 9+16
then d2=5

then d=d1+d2=5+sqrt(5)
