I have a friend who exaggerates and lies about stupid things?

The thing is that she hasn't got a good memory so she forgets the things she has said in the past and then ends up telling you the same story but with a completely different beginning, middle or end. That is fine but yesterday, while I picked her son up from youth club, the heavens opened and we all ran home, he was lagging behind and started crying, as I turned round he was still running so I grabbed his hand and ran with him. I explained why he was upset and the following morning she said that the reason he was crying was because he had fallen over, fair enough I must have missed that, AND he had cut his knee. I apologised like mad and she was fine about it. My gripe is that on taking her son to school and knowing what she is like I checked her sons knees and there was no mark at all, I was so angry that she had lied to make me feel bad, I really want to say something about her lies because I don't beleive anything she says now, how do I go about that without us both getting hurt

We all have a friend or family member that's like that.
Sometimes they put us in very embarrassing spots !
But, we need to understand that these people crave attention for some reason, and I don't believe that they are truly happy with their lives ! When she lies again about something that she has already lied about, say "That's not what you said the last time, you said...." You'll be surprised how she paddles to get out of it, or just tell you that you're the one who misunderstood ! If she is a very close friend, take it with a grain of salt ! If she goes overboard, then I would confront her, and ask her why she always lies about everything !
It's hard to confront somebody when you care about them,
but I don't think that we're doing them any favors by letting them get away with it all the time.

People who are lying as a matter of course on daily issues simply think it is the easy way around things in their life.

Your "friend" (and I use the term LOOSELY) sounds very shallow and insecure. Age doesn't buy wisdom and some people never learn that honesty IS the best policy.

You can't change her. Only she can make the choice to change herself. But you don't have to hang around her and watch her self destruct.

Tell her directly that you have caught her lying to you several times and that you don't appreciate it and that you don't want it to happen anymore.

Offer her another chance to be more forthright, but be willing to sever the relationship with her if she cannot bring herself to be truthful.

You cannot save those who are unwilling to save themselves in some measure.

I married someone who does the same thing! It drives me up a wall.All I can tell ya is...They won't change...in there minds they are right. I don't think they even realize what they do.It almost seems like a sickness.If I didn't love my husband it would be enough to drive me away.Good luck.

Yea, man, that is a bad one lying about the skinned knee. That is bull. Ask her what happened that the knee heeled in a few hours?

just tell her how you feel if she is a true friend she will listen to what you have to say, true friends dont make you feel bad about yourself, they wouldnt lie to you either. usually they are there and help you throu things. talk to her about it, tell her how you feel. tell her that you checked his knee and didnt see anymarks. once they get caught in a lie they usually fess up.
