There was probably less violence - there was also war and segregation. The notion of some perfect golden era is generally a myth.

Of course things were better back in the day, as in the day when Americans thought like Americans. When people were hard working, law abiding, spirited people with hopes, dreams, and a vision for the future. Somewhere along to line, the Northeast came under the grip of some flavor of socialism, and you can see the results. Everything is overpriced, there are so many poor people living in crowded conditions, and job opportunities & upward mobility aren't very abundant. The state & local governments' solution to social problems is always to take more rights away from the people (stricter gun control laws, higher taxes), yet crime rates are soaring, schools are still failing, and streets become more and more dilapidated.

Depends on how far back you want to go. 30 years ago there really wasn't much difference in the violence levels in Philly...if anything, I think it's a BETTER town now than it was then in general. Ed Rendell really did a lot towards improving Philadelphia....John Street was kind of like going backwards.

I think the 70's - 80's were the most violent times in Philly. it still depends on how deep into what neighborhoods you go to. Philly is still my #1 place to visit as far as learning US history. the Art around the city alone is worth the trip. they have actually made (street art) graffiti an art...but as far as violence, any city has its good and bad. some of the southern cities( Memphis,Houston, new Orleans) are moving up in the way of violence , more so than the east coast cities.
