I'm interviewing 4 candidates for a human resource position and although I have all the questions I really need, I want to ask something that will completely throw them, so they actually have to think before asking.

Why did you choose your college/university? How did you decide what your major would be?

I like to ask those because you get answers like "Well, all my friends from high school were going there so I wanted to stay with them." Or, "My dad went there so I had to go there." The best one I got was from a graduate of UCLA, when I asked the question of them they said "Is there any other choice of college that I would want to attend?" It made me chuckle and really loosened up the interview.

I was asked "If you could be a tree which kind would you be and why?" Was kind of strange and did set me back for a minute to think.

I was once asked "What were the 5 biggest problems you had with your last job?" The fact that it was negative and that it included a specific number was unsettling and I had to think fast.

Hope this helps.
