The Mobile Suit Gundam Series because the overall quality and animation is better than Robotech.

I have watched all the Macross / Robotech ( Series, Movies and OVA ) and all the Gundam since Wing and my favor goes to Gundam all the way.
In fact in Macross there aren't a lot of good series. The first series was good as well as Macross Plus. The rest is not that great. Macross 7 is good for the music only, Zero for the graphics, Moepesda for the fighter ( i like the blue one ).
In Gundam everytime it is a new world and new mechas. In Macross it is always ( or almost ) only walkiries with a gun. In Gundam, the mobile suit all have their own special weapons, light sabers.

In order of good to bad:
Chou Jikuu Yousai Macross, Kidou Senshi Gundam, and Robotech: The Macross Saga.
Anyway. For the series who infuences the most of current mechanical series, there are three examples that latter Gundam series kinda stated which series influences the most:
Lacus Clyne, Fei Yuri, and the whole style of the Zeta Gundam TV.

Personally, I'm torn between them both, they both incorporate things that the other series doesn't bother to add in, but I would say I am leaning towards RoboTech more, although the story is not as in-depth, it has better character relations and a better sense of unity for the world on a more distant scale threat than what could go wrong for the L5 colonies, ArchAngel, the Minerva in the next 30 minutes.

robotech,
the continuity between series actually exists and it really is kind of twisted when you think about it.
I think war and its horrors are portrayed far better in robotech than in gundam.
Seriously? anyone remember force of arms where nearly the entire population of earth gets wiped out?
and the scene before everyone dies is about a cop helping a lost little girl- and they are both just wiped out?
The ending of the second war which due to a huge mistake causes the third?
I personally still feel that Golgo 13 The Professional is a far more enjoyable series and story than either of them.

I pretty much enjoy the story of Robotech more. It's drama was more better to watch than the action of it. And mech animes really strive on its action more. Unless its Gundam Seed Destiny in which it relies too much on its drama that it makes me wanna choke.

I'm not much of a Mecha person, but I would have to say neither. I prefer Eureka Seven, since it breaks the stereotype that all Mecha pilots are angsty teenagers. True, Holland is a spoiled brat who acts like a teenage boy, but he is nonetheless an adult. In the series KLFs are piloted by emotionally stable adults mostly, leaving only Anemone and Eureka and Renton as exceptions.
