Yes they should be protected...as they are the only species that produce milk that is pink in colour...fact..

They are an overly protected species. They stay indoors at all times and are hardly ever allowed out to play.

They don't need protection. They're very hard to find, let alone kill. They will always see their predator before their predator sees them. And don't let their girth and color fool you --- they can run like the wind, and climb trees faster than any cat I've ever seen. They blend in very well, too. If they feel threatened, they will kill you just as soon as look at you.
