I have $500, should i get the Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 processor or save my money and get the(Quad-Core)Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 processor?

Defenitely go for the Quad Core.
Never buy entry level (latest) CPUs. There prices drop 30% a few months after initial release.

* Quad Core will work on the many of the same Intel sockets as dual core

if you are samrt buy a core2duo processor
its best
Quad processor requires a specific motherboard as well

only if u are planning very soon for Vista go for Quad or extreme
else
Cor2duo is good
