My dairy-farmer relatives use old cheese or crunchy peanut-butter tied on with fine thread. The thread prevents them from just licking it off, they actually have to chew and pull.

Rat Trap Bait

Bait with what the rats have been eating. There are 2 common species of rats. Roof Rats and Norway(sewer) Rats. Roof Rats more commonly eat fruits and nuts, Norway Rats more commonly eat proteins, like meats, cheese and pet food.
Rats are also very suspicious creatures. They tend to avoid anything new, like a trap. Put the traps out for a few days with no bait. Then baited, but not set for a few days, then baited and set. They need to get used to seeing the traps. The traps will work best if you set them along the walls where the rats have been moving. Sometimes you can see greasy smears on the base boards. They like to travel with one side of their body against a wall.

There are lost of things you can try. Most choose peanut butter, but it doesn't snap till he gets down to where the metal is and if you just put a little on there it dries up. So what I do is use super glue and glue a small plastic suqare box about the sixe of your thumb nail to the lever that has holes in it. This way you can put what ever you want as bait and the mouse will do his best to get to it, eats nothing and the trap snaps the culprit.

IN fact the last Mice was so small it snapped his necked.

Now if you want to catch an ENTIRE FAMILY all at once...heres' how you do it>>>>
Get a trash can and fill it up with paper and trash near the top so the Mouse can jump in and eat and jump right back out to the counter top.

Place the trash can next to the counter. and do this for about three days to make sure they have told the entire family there is food.

Now on the fourth day, put the trash can back against the counter, but this time don't put anything in it. Leave it empty and the Mouse comes running down the table top and jumps in and get can;t out.You will catch nearly an entire family or rats doing this in one night. You wake up in the morning and go look in your trash can and there at the bottom jumping around scared to death...its' funny./

The you take them far away from your house and turn them loose. or fill it water from your water hose and watch them have a Sea burial. I caught 15 Mice in one night with that trick.

I set here in front of my computer for exactly 5 minutes trying to think of something Rats won`t eat. I haven`t thought of any yet. Something soft that will stick to the tongue of the trap I suppose. bread, cheese, peanut butter, some part of a soft candy bar, your field is unlimited. Don`t get down hearted if you don`t catch any or have any your traps thrown the first nite. My experience has been they will walk around any and every thing the first nite, the second nite its 40 60, but the third nite any thing is fair game for a rat.

peanut butter is great, here's a trick coat the trap with the peanut butter as everyone as told you , but when you lay it set the peanut butter towards the wall mice and rats feel their way with their whiskers so if you set the peanut butter against the baseboard you should catch the little rascal. he has no way to take the bait and run. no matter what you bait it with.

Try chocolate it definitely works but you must thoroughly clean the trap first before baiting and wear gloves while baiting as rats can smell humans and will avoid the trap, i know it works cause i did it.

Stick some freshly cooked bacon in some delicious natural peanut butter. It also helps to use new traps (I really think that rats and mice can tell if their kind has died in a particular trap)

there is a trick that i've heard about, you can try peanut butter but it didn't work for us, try putting a little bread under the little lip in the trap and put a few drops of lemon juice on the bread so that it soaks into the bread then set the trap and put it along the floor boards. just try it

Take a piece of pork loin and cut off about an inch slice. Put it in-between saran wrap and pound it thin. You then want to dip it in egg and then into 4C italian style bread crumbs. After this put it into a frying pan with hot vegetable oil. Fry for a few minutes on each side. You can take a piece of this and put it in the trap, eat the rest yourself.
