The hair braiders are a waste of money , a mixture of the two would be perfect - a Barbie Pegasus Horse head thing ( makes me laugh - sorry ) she can play with its hair and play at being a growed up ( thats what my daughter used to say). Pick up some cheap
and cheerful kids make up - Tesco or Asda is usually good for this and let her make herself and her pony up.
Alternatively things like dressing up shoes, boxed full of hairbands, bath tiome sparkly goodies always go down a treat as do the creative gifts like make your own belt, friendship bracelets, handbag etc.
Im sure that what ever you get her she will love.

I usually get gifts for all of my little nieces and cousins for xmas. Ages ranged from 2-21
and i've realised.. they all love grown up things. For a 5 year old "grown up wannabe" .. i've realised.. something like a Purse ( a play one of course!) with some bracelets/necklaces works really nicely. You can put in some lisa frank stuff also.
I don't get why the kids these days think they're so grown up.. but yeah.. i'll tell you I'm-grown-up toys really do work for them.

Those things dont work! My daughter hates hers!
Get her, with Mom's permission, a kid's makeup kit. They are washable and come out of clothes easily.
You could also get her some play clothes, they make them in a trunk and it has all the items for like 5 different outfits.
All little girls want to be 'grown up'. I am sure she will love anything you get her.

I used to have a crazy braider when I was a kid. It tangled my hair up and made me cry! I wouldn't advise you to buy her that.
I found a really cute pair of shoes I bet she'd ove at monsoon for £14. The links below.
Anything from Clare's is usually good, try looking at their top ten things, also below.
You should also try checking out the New Look kid's range, for ages 0-10.
Good luck finding something you're niece will love!

dont get the crazy braids they tangle up ur hair a treat!! instead i think you should get her a few bits and pieces that look grown up but are made for children...accessorize does this particularly well look at this purse for example
http://www.monsoon.co.uk/invt/99011330
and this bangle
http://www.monsoon.co.uk/invt/98429660
or these socks
http://www.monsoon.co.uk/invt/99363635
and then you can tell her their from a 'grown up' shop!!!
on second thorts they have an entire section for little girls but it does look very grown up
http://www.monsoon.co.uk/icat/accessorizeforgirls
alternatively when my sister was younger she bought some really gorgeous clothes from a place called pumpkin patch: heres the addy:

If your willing to spend a little bit more on your niece petit bateau is always a winner they dont have many stores around but you can always order on line. the stuff they do is one of a kind and i dont think you would find anything like it
take this skirt for example
http://www.petit-bateau.fr/control/product/~category_id=JUPES_ROBES_FI/~pcategory_id=FI_FRA/~product_id=71212
also they do some REALLY fashionable clothes for children at vertbaudet and it is SO cheap
http://www2.vertbaudet.co.uk/cgi-bin/Vertbaudet.storefront/45f029c2001a52d4277e0a0b003305fd/Product/View/1930008
hope this gave you some ideas!

The hair things are a complete waste and never work, after one young daughter and several friends we all concur! They love dress up at that age so a child's make-up set, or one of the princess type outfits, it can be princess, Cinderella, any of them. They love dressing up, hats, sunglasses anything like that.

how about one of those ballarina kits? A tutu, work out bar and dvd showing basic ballet steps they can practice with?
Or maybe a 'fantasy' costume, cinderella or an arabian princess.
Another idea, a plain old fashioned slate chalk board with chalk and erasers.

DON'T get one of those BRAID thingys they knot your hair and twist it and your hair gets stuvck in it. Big thing for 5 year olds just now is the BARBIE HEAD or the BARBIE HORSE HEAD that you can braid, put make up on etc..... They're approx £20-£30. You can get them at Argos or Toys-r-US

make her a pretend wallet. find some of those fake credit cards you get in your junk mail, get an old check book, and put it in a pretty girly wallet. some wallets have calculators in them, that would be fun to play with.
