I agree with you and its quite simple really. Human beings like all other living beings on this planet are concerned about their survival, only that the characteristics of survival differ. In the case of a bacteria, survival means getting food and running away from percieved danger, in the case of human beings survival can mean a wide variety of things ranging from having an attractive sexual mate to having more power over the people around you or trying to improve the conditions of the people you identify with. All these are manifestations of the very same survival instinct that is present in each and every living being on earth. And in an attempt to improve one's surivival situation we try to get associated to people who are in a better survival situation as us. Its not that mechanical though. Its quite obvious then that we often fall for people who are more powerful than us, having more percieved social prestige than us and the like.

Better than falling in love with a mooch and a looser. Just learn and don't be jealous. Try not to drag that person down. Instead do your best to surpass their characteristics and then the two of you will be an awesome team together.
