Perhaps older people do know quite a bit, but when they are unreasonable, the problem might be that the world is often changing without them. I have found the opposite to be more true... younger people often think they know it all. The older I get, the more mysteries I find about life.

Oh honey, let me tell you, I moved from Chicago to Florida's west coast 4 years ago, and we're living in "God's Waiting Room" here! You can't go anywhere without running into someone who definitely qualifies for the senior discount at McDonald's. I think older people are subject to a lot of prejudice and scorn simply based on their age- perhaps that makes them a bit standoffish. And maybe they spout their opinions as fact because younger people act like they don't know anything valuable in today's society. We lived next door to a man for 3 years that was the definition of the word "curmudgeon"- and the first week we lived here, our dog ran over and peed on his tree! My husband went over to apologize, but the guy was having none of it. He walked around in army fatigues all the time, and I often wonder how many wars he's fought in. Sometimes people have gone through so many hardships, it shapes their personalities, like Mr. Sunshine next door. IN any event, I think it's always a good policy to show older people respect, even if they're rude. As my Mom always said, you can't control how people behave, you can only control how you react to it- set the example.

I dont think old age gives you the right to be selfish, but it's quite often the case. Old people are very set in their ways, and perhaps the reason why this old guy hasnt got any other friends is because he's rude and selfish. I'de certainly be tactfully pointing this out to him. He's ruining his own life by driving other people away.

He's 75 years old. He's earned the right to be whatever he wants to be in life!
