Well, I've used Partition Magic many times and it works great! Here is a link for free software. Please try it on you won risk if you want to. It sounds scary though. Do not try this soft unless you back up everything on your hard disk.

Here is the second option: Do this only if you are comfortable installing OS.
If you can backup everything on you hard disk, do that and try this one. You can partition your hard disk at the time of your Windows OS installation. This process will erase everything on your hard drive though. DON’T FORGET TO BACKUP BEFORE YOU FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS BELLOW.
This applies to Windows 2000 pro and XP only.
At the time on installation, when prompts for Drive selection, delete the existing partition (in your case, there will be only one partition).
Now create a new partition. Remember to use your desired space for the partition. DO NOT use the entire space available. 1024MB = 1 GB. This will become your C: partition. Leave the rest of the space on the HD for later use.
Once you finish installing windows,
Right click on “My Computer” and select “Manage”
Select “Disk management”
Right click on an empty space on Disk 0 and select “Create New partition”
Follow instructions and you should be able to create another partition on your disk.
You can use the save tool for delete a partition.

You might check into a program called Partition Magic.
Good program. Just read up on the risk of losing data any
time you change partitions. If the data is important you should
buy another drive and install in system. Drives are so cheap now.

As everyone above said PartitionMagic (PM) is good and I have had very good success in partitioning, repartitioning and combining the same hard drive numerous times. PM does have a trialware version but all it does is show you what it can do and it will not repartition your drive.
Here is a link to a document that explains how to repartition your hard drive using Linux, which is free. I have never done it this way so I cannot vouch for it.

No freebies on this one, and even the pay ones do not recommend playing with the OS partition. Partition Magic would be the recommendation.
