Is it OK to keep driving 4WD vehicles in town, when we know they never go off road, and keep chewing fuel?

Yes, as long as manufacturers are selling those vehicles, you can buy and drive what you so choose to. Go recycle some cans, or plant a tree to "offset" you carbon usage. That's what AlGore does, and he consumes far more energy than the average joe.
