This strategy was first described in the book titled "marketing warfare" - a wonderful and must study book for any business management student and businessmen.
It is a form of warfare by which the strategically weaker side assumes the tactical offensive in selected forms, times and places. This is the weapon of the weak. It is the strategy adopted from military practices. It involves finding a segment of the market which is small enough to defend
For example, In any city or town you can usuallyfind a fast food restaurant bigger than McDonald’s.

Guerilla Marketing = Novelty Marketing
(And it's a bad choice of words because guerilla warfare means 'at any cost' which is NOT what guerilla marketing is about)
Example: Currently there's lots of press about the new US dollar coin because some of them don't have the printing on the edge.
The US Mint claims mistakes like that happen all the time but guess what...I don't believe it...they say it could be millions of 'mistake' coins out there and they are fetching $500 on ebay.
Well why would a mint with the technology to print 700 perfect coins a SECOND suddenly not have the ability to spot check such a large number of them?
I think it's done on purpose and it's a GUERILLA MARKETING campaign.
It costs them nothing, they get plenty of extra PR for a coin that they want to be accepted, which hasn't before, and no one's gonna stop using coins because the mint makes mistakes.
Any time someone gets a coin (buys it) and doesn't use it that's a profit for them. They get 25 cents for the quarter and it never gets 'turned in' by using it. It's like making ice and never ever taking it out of the freezer...that water is removed from circulation.

In a nutshell, it sapost to make say first "what is that?" now that it has your attention, you look closer and then the " ooooh ok" sets in.
This can be done several ways: people making a human pyramid and then dropping a banner in front of them, fall apart the do again some where else.
It can be a chalk picture on the side walk or street. it up to the imagination.
The anti-smoking people are masters of guerrilla marketing.
