A day is defined as being 24 hours in length. So night is actually part of day. The length of the night would be determined by the time of year and the location on earth.

People use the phrase: 'there is 24 hours in a day'.
This is meant literally such as to the effect that night is incorporated into the 24hours. You can perceive day & night as being two things, split it into half, say each has 12 hours. But then you have the factor with when the sun rises & sets each day. So, I suppose 12 hours is as closest to proximity you can get.

In this case day is a segment of time. Of the 24 hours it is spilt into light and dark, which is mostly referred to as day and night.
