Well, they say you should imagine them standing there in their underpants or on the toilet.. The only problem then is the inexplicable inane grin on your face ...

It can be tricky, but usually you build the fear & nervousness up in your head. Try not to think about the social situation until you get there, otherwise you will be a nervous wreck before you have even arrived! Be yourself, & practice talking to people. Communication is a skill that doesn't come naturally to everyone. Remember that you are just as interesting as the next person & what you say counts. I wouldn't recommend alcohol as it is easy to have too much & make a fool out of yourself. Then you'll end up feeling paranoid the next day & it becomes a vicious circle. Good luck & practice makes perfect.

You can do this by not thinking about it too much. The more you think about being nervous the more nervous you will be. All of our emotions are pretty much linked together. If you think about it, when you're nervous you tend to feel nauseous, and slightly cold. Sometimes even sweat. The same feeling comes forth after crying too much also and anger. You can also get that feeling after laughing a lot. You cry when you laugh you cry when your sad and angry. Its all the same. So just think you're happy and hopefully you will be. Remember also that they maybe feeling the same as you. Nervous and small. But you needn't be. You may make new friends if you just ignore nervous anxiety. I used to be a very shy person till i realised this. Hope this helps.

Imagine them naked! Actually that could be a little awkward! Let them do the talking to start with, and mimic their body language. This will help you to relax and they will see that your interested in what they're saying.

Instead of thinking that your nervous, pretend it's excitement! I always do this and find myself tricked into enjoying myself when all i really want to do is throw up.

Give yourself a prep talk. You know what your strengths are so remind yourself. You should never have to try too hard, if someone is making you feel nervous when talking to them, they're probably not worth talking to.

Be yourself!

X

What you have to remember is to be yourself. I can guarantee some of the people you meet are just as nervous as you. Put on a smile and hold your head high they will soon start talking to you.
