I will be travelling from Cape Town (South Africa) to the British Virgin Islands (Carribbean). The trip can take from 4 to 6 weeks.
How do I deal with sea-sickness (if it happens)?
What kind of gear will I need?

make sure you bring lots of warm, cormfortable clothing. I just sailed down island and it gets VERY cold at night on the water. Socks, sweats, etc..also bring a raincoat, some good sunscreen, a hat or bandanna, a good book.(maiden voyage, if you haven't read it, is a book about an 18 year old manhattanite who sails solo around the world for two years. It's a great book to read on the water!)Bring a airtight waterproof pouch big enough to at least hold your documentation. Ginger ale or ginger beer is good for a mild case of sea sickness. Or candied ginger works well too. If you take dramamine, make sure you take it before you leave. Start with a small dose. Most people don't need it at all, and it'll make you very drowsy. Bring a first aid kit. Baby wipes come in handy for a quick clean-up, you won't want to shower while underway. Soup and crackers are a good easy meal, not hard to heat up, and if you are seasick, you won't be able to handle any more than that. And definitely don't forget your camera.

sailing gloves!

really good foul weather gear ( aka foulies )

a life-line harness........go to a good chandler for the above!

several pairs of non slip deck shoes.....something that will dry quickly because they will get wet.....

you will be VERY limited on fresh water so no washing of clothes!.......bring many shorts and light tops; one or two heavier tops to wear on night watches.it does get cold at sea......2 or more long blue jeans ( dungarees) and just resign to being a little salt caked and dirty when you get in

the first long hot shower and trip to the laundromat in Roadtown will be HEAVEN!!!

pack everything in a soft duffel bag.....no suitcases aboard! No room!

A soap or shampoo that will work with salt water.....Joy dish liquid in the States is great

Seasickness can happen and it eventually passes ( after a few days of I wish I was dead)! In America you can get a prescription drug called Transderm Scopolomine; its a very small band-aid that you put behind your ear the day before you set out.........I know dozens who have used it and its never failed. TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR FIRST!!!!

Sailing is hard work, you will be required to haul seawater soaked ropes and that is very hard on the hands. You'll develope muscles you never knew you had and there will be times when you will scream for dry land.
You need to go to a marine outfitters and tell them about the trip you are going to make, they will help you purchase everything you need.

Bring water slippers to wear that cannot be penetrated by a barb of a spiney urchin. Lots of those things are on the floor of the ocean and you may be walking near them. They penetrate quickly, really hurt and are tough to remove.
