Is it me, or are the dumb people getting dumber? Spelling is a lost art, grammar-forget about it, and ask them to find the United States on a map, and most of them would ask "What's a map?"

Yes, people are dumber now than 20 years ago and they will continue to get even dumber. The reason is that education is now basically an extension of the economy. Grades and degrees are products, students are consumers, and there's no interest in actual knowledge.

You might think I'm overstating this. You would be wrong. I taught at Florida State University recently. When I left, department representatives were being trained to refer to students as CUSTOMERS. My alma mater, Creighton University -- a private, Jesuit school -- is also starting to infuse the language of money exchange into its system.

If religion is the enemy of politics, then money is the enemy of education. You cannot force everyone into the same religious beliefs and you cannot turn knowledge into a business.

Proper education is a privilege that many don't have. Governments all over the world is more keen on putting their money on weapons than education. Keeping a large part of the population undereducated is also a way to keep the power away from the people. Even more devious is to give the people education that is of low standard and tricking them into thinking that they are getting a good education. The people doesn't even know or understand how dumb they are. There are straight A students out there that finds out that they know nothing when they start going to another school.

I am American and I actually agree with Hawkeye. It's not that we are dumb but we are very ignorant to other cultures seeing as though most of us stay in America and we are pretty far away from Europe and the connecting countries and a lot of times I'm embarrassed by my people and how they think they are the greatest but a lot of times I will see people mock those people and joke about how we think we are the greatest and I see people joke about how my country seems obssesed with guns (mainly the south) hopefully we will change in the future.

That's very funny, but why is this in books & authors category? Oh well, people aren't dumb, they just don't realize that what they do sometimes makes them sound dumb. Everyone has a dumb moment. No body's perfect. I do know what a map is, so yeah!!! I'm not dumb lol.

AMEN to that. The other day my son who is a junior in college came home and told me someone in his American History class said that Los Angeles was a state. I fear for the future of America. It should be required that every school child read Eats, Shoots and Leaves. There is now a young reader edition.

Hate to break it to you, but asking that question doesn't exactly make you a genius. Anyway I've met plenty of rich engineers who couldn't spell and plenty of unemployed English and Geography majors. How do you phonetically spell, "Would you like fries with that?"

so. half the people will be below 100. half of the world population will be below 100.

tests in my country (uk) are getting so easy now. my little brother got A's for his high-school exams and he's as thick as a plank. people are getting stupider and i think it's mainly because of the abundance of media in the world.
there's no point in finding out the why's and how's to things anymore because all you need to do nowadays is just ask someone else and you'll get your answer. my girlfriend is finishing her degree this year and yesterday she turned around to me and goes: 'the heatness in this room is unbearable' ..! standards are definitely dropping.

With some it's ignorance, and with some it's apathy--they either don't know or don't care. Some of them would try to learn, if they knew they were missing something, and some would just say, "Yeah, so? Pass the beer, man."
