Critical thinking, so that a person knows how to analyze what s/he reads, and writing skills, necessary in most places in life in which an educated person finds him/herself. If you are talking about entire fields of study, there is no "best" which fits everyone.

I would say philosophy. It helps you define life's big questions like "what does it mean to be human?", "what is the role of the government/religion/love/war?", and "how should we live our lives. With a background in philosophy you can have almost any job and will learn how to think, not just answer questions.
