I went into teaching and it's nothing like they taught me at teacher's school. It's been a big disappointment, not to mention a source of daily stress.

I haven't officially taught in my own classroom yet. I've been graduated with my teaching degree now for 3 years. I was suprised in student teaching that teaching was different than I thought. I was all excited to be a teacher, and I thought I loved to teach primary general ed students and then I realized that wasn't my passion. The first year our of school I subbed. I learned so much during those experiences that I realized I wanted to go into special education. Right now I'm going to get my special ed certification and working as an aide in a special ed room and love it. I wouldn't change going into special ed for anything. If I stayed just wanting to be a primary gen ed teacher, I probably would have been burned out quick. Being the teacher is a lot of responsibility, and it is not for everyone.

To be honest, I hated my first year of teaching. College (other than student teaching) doesn't really prepare you at all. However, I love it now. I just had to deal with the fact that I didn't know what I was doing and that a lot of what I was trying wasn't going to work... not because I was a bad teacher, but because I lacked experience. Figure half of what you do your first year doesn't go as planned; that means the following year you have the half that DID work, which is more than what you started out with. Each year, you add to your repertoire. By your third/fourth year, you have a pretty good idea of what will work (in reality vs. in theory, which is what you learn in college). Hang in there and remember: No matter how bad this year is, it will end. Every September you get a fresh start. In how many professions can you say that?

There are many people who say that about their teaching careers. I believe it is what you make it. You are the dominant figure, you are the teacher. Your class can be as fun or as boring as you make it. If you are not happy with the way you are teaching, search the web for some fun and interesting ways you can teach a lesson. You can modify it to fit your needs. You will be surprised at how much the atmosphere in your classroom will change too! You can even ask for fun ideas on here (yahoo! answers). Good Luck!

I'm sorry to hear about your teaching experience, thus far into your career.

*In California, most teachers tend to "move on" within the first five years of teaching.

*My first several years were quite tough (adult/youthful offenders).

*I really can't wait to go to work in the morning, now.

**It's been over 20 yrs.

**I teach summer school for FUN.

*I certainly don't like EVERYTHING teenagers (or the staff) do -that's why it's called a job, and that's why they pay us- , but overall, for me, teaching's really a total blast.

*I miss my other careers (military officer, legal intern/student lawyer), but my heart really is in teaching.

I would recommend that you give teaching another shot (teacher training really doesn't prepare you for this profession ...), and keep your vocational options open outside of teaching (i.e., send out your resumes, research what's hot in your major, etc.).

Teaching really is an art and a discipline, and it takes awhile to craft. Unlike most other arts, there's a slew of negative forces which get in the way of the development of your art; therein lies the discipline.

Good luck, please hang in there, I hope this helps.

I started out teaching and became disillusioned.
I made the mistake of going into Admin.
I decided to get into business instead. After 20 years of sales and marketing I went back to teaching!
I'm now teaching English in S. Korea.
Stick out the year where you are and then look into teaching overseas. You get to travel and experience different cultures.
You don't have to worry about parents, grades or attendance.
They desperately need teachers in Korea, Japan, China, India, Russia, Taiwan ...
You should look into it.

You have to love your job to like it. Does that make any sense, plus you are off for 3 months during the summer. Hang in there. Remember why you wanted to teach in the first place.
