I was wondering if the Wii remote will work when playing any of the old NES, GameCube, N64 games, or if I'll need a special controller?

3 Things;
1. Wiimote will work with about any game invented before the analog stick, mainly NES and SNES games.
2. They don't sell Gamecube games on virtual console. And the wiimote doesn't work with them anyway.
3. You need a Gamecube controller to play Gamecube and N64 games. The wiimote won't work.

Some games, like NES, TG16 and some Genesis ones work with the remote. But for systems with more buttons on the controller, like SNES, N64 and Gamecube, you'll need either the Classic controller or a Gamecube one.

You can play NES games, and some Genesis games with the Wiimote, but the rest of the games (SNES,Turbografx, N64) require a classic controller or a Gamecube controller...Check out http://www.virtuaconsole.com for more info on the Virtual Console.
