Well, many Indian recipes recommend the addition of onions and garlic to add to the aroma and taste. Garlic is believed to help in purification of blood. Indian everyday food habits include bread(mostly made of wheat flour), curry (made of different vegetables/meat/soaked lentils cooked in tablespoon of oil, with addition of mustard seeds, cummin seeds, turmeric powder, asafoetida, jalapeno powder and salt to the oil and water sufficient to cook the veggies) and lentil soup to go with rice.
India is land of spices. Its believed that spices not only add to the taste and aroma but also have medicinal value. Spicy food is perfectly suitable to Indian climate. Hence you would often find Indian recipes spicy. But these spices shouldn't be consumed in excess. These are only meant to add to aroma and taste. Even Indians are likely to have acidity and burning sensations in digestive tract when spices are consumed in large amounts. Its difficult to say as to consumption of which spices lead to odour but addition of garlic and onion often leads to bad breath.
Indians bathe everyday. In fact, in some conservative families people dont even let anybody step outside of the house before having a bath. House wives dont start cooking food unless they have a bath followed by morning prayer.
Less than normal intake of water could be one of the reasons for odour.

Biological features of Indians are adapted to either hot or humid environments. Maybe that's what you can sense. Body odor is is a biological factor effective in all human beings. Eating habits do have an impact on the factor.

Talking about bad odor - bad odor is what is unpleasant to a person. What is okay to me may be disgusting to you, or what is okay to you may be disgusting to me. It's the same with body odor. You may find it bad, and few others may find it pleasant. It's a matter of your own preferences and environment.

EVERY Indian? You sure? ;) Some smell that way, yes, and I'd consider a unique smell of their proud heritage :D! And perhaps your teacher is right; it must be due to the types of food--mainly spices-- that they eat.
(I'm not Indian, but I've tons of Indian friends, and I love them!)

I believe you are referring to Native American Indians because I have noticed the same body odor when I have met them. 3 times. All cultures have some body odor, but I noticed the musky smell.

you are what you eat...i have the same question & i got the same answer from most people i asked....most indian eat 'curry" everytime they have their meal....."curry" is the reason....my indian friends do have this bad odor....& people talk about them coz they feel uncomfortable...so do i....body odor is a sensitive issue...i wish i can tell them how i feel & maybe suggest them to use deodorant....but how do i tell?!!
we know our own odor...i myself use deodorant everytime after bath...not for me..for people around me..

its their cooking spices.

I have two friends who actually are Indian.
and they told me it's Indian Curry and religious scents (inscents i think its called)

the smells stay in their house and in the air in the house, and it just cakes in i suppose. but i went camping w/ them w/ school, they didn't smell like that because they weren't at home where the scent was.

just like how no one's house smells the same., its just how the cook and religious practices.
