Can anyone suggest a really good way to propose to my girlfriend? Something special, not necessarily romantic. I live in South Africa, Joburg to be exact! Thank you all for helping!:-)

Wow Motti, big step - here's the thing - I think privacy or anyway implied privacy is what I would prefer. Air balloon sounds great but there will be at least the driver of the thing with you up there, also, what if she drops the ring over the side in her excitement?
I like the incenta's idea of carrying her into the middle of the fountain but then you might get arrested for being in the water or something, you never can tell.
Personally, I think a picnic in some special spot you have or alongside the river somewhere - and not a braai because then you are too wrapped up in the fire and the cooking and all that, just somewhere alone, outside and peaceful. that would press my buttons.
If you were in Cape Town I would suggest the top of Table Mountain or high up at the back end of Kirstenbosch with a view out over the city - not sure where you would find that in your city but try.

You should make sure that you propose in a manner that is going to tell her that you know her better than any other person on the planet. Think of all her favorite things and remember things that she has only mentioned (one time) throughout your entire relationship. She may have forgotten mentioning this to you and will be impressed that you actually pay attention to her. Women are usually very expressive and take great comfort in the fact that their partner is actually listening when they speak.
Watch the movie "Sweet Home Alabama". This will give you an idea of how sweet and thoughtful you need to be in order to win the hand of your true love. You should be in touch with hers/your innermost feelings and thoughts.

first of all congrats on finding the one special person that you want to spend the rest of your life with, may you have a wonderful life together.
you say you stay in JHB, well why don't you take her to North Cliff tower at night with some bubbly. The view is so stunning from there sit there for a while and then get down on one knee and tell her how you feel and ask her if she will do you the honor to become your wife.

I'm not sure what you could do. Maybe go to Mandela Square and carry her into the fountain, and while the two of you are all wet and laughng, pop out the ring right in front of all the bystanders and people in the restaurants...
Who knows? Della Salute or Baglios might just call you in for a congratulatory meal...lol

Hey congrats on deciding to pop the big question!
I must say that I quite like the hot-air balloon idea that someone above me had.
If you don't want to do that, you could take her to Cathedral Peak for a couple days and pop the question when you're admiring one of the views (they are really stunning). Here's their website:

What about having one of those planes fly by with a message "Will You Marry me Kate?" While you're sitting together somewhere in a field or on the beach. She'd remember that forever!
Another way....Bring her out on a picnic and when she opens up her dessert, all wrapped up in foil and popcorn, there's her ring?
I dunno...just the idea of you planning it in some special way will get her excited and happy.
