indicating date: used to indicate a date that is a specified number of years after the birth of Jesus Christ. Full form anno Domini

Before or after the date?

Because of its meaning, ad is traditionally put before the numeral to which it relates, so that it makes grammatical sense if understood in its expanded form: ad 1453. In practice, ad is often put after the numeral, being then understood as a word in its own right, and it is normally acceptable to put it after the identification of a century, as in the fifth century ad.

It's an abbreviation for "Anno Domini", meaning "in the year of our Lord". The commonly used calendar was designed so that the year that Jesus was born would be "1 AD".

Two things to remember:
(1) The guy who developed this calender (Dionysius Exiguus, or "Dennis the Small") made a mistake in his figuring, so that the year of Jesus' birth is actually around 6 BC.

(2) Anyone who tells you that AD stands for "after death" really needs to be smacked with a clue-by-four.

AD = Anno Domini - Literally "The year of the Lord"

No one is for sure when this was but it was about 2005 - 2007 years ago, when Jesus was born. So every time you write the date, you are acknowledging that Jesus the Lord was born about 2007 yrs ago.

ad- is an English prefix. It was both a prefix and a preposition in Latin meaning "toward, to, near, at." As a prefix, the consonant (d) became assimilated to the initial consonant of the verb that it attached to.
