I just changed my Instead cup and it was filled with bloody mucus. I am on my first day of my period and this is alarming. What would it be. Ive never had this before.

Whether with softcups like Instead or original menstrual cups like Divacup these allow you to see exactly what is coming out of your vagina, as apposed to other options where you don't get to see this stuff. With cups you will see not only blood but uterus tissue, discharge and mucus.

Menstruation isn't just blood, chances are what you are seeing is either larger pieces of the uterus lining that look like blood clots or raw liver, and otherwise I'd say it is in fact mucus you are seeing. Your cervix always produces this mucus; it just tends to be more prominent during menstruation because your cervix is open and so this acts as part of the vaginas self-defence functions.

If you have an IUD this mucus will also be far thicker, I remember my first cycle with an IUD I was shocked by the very thick bloody mucus I found in my Mooncup, far more than was normal for me without an IUD.

Basically you have probably only just noticed it because in the past if you had been using other menstrual options you simply wouldn't have been able to see this mucus, and some months this mucus will be more noticeable than others. Trust me, the mucus in itself is nothing to worry about.

The first question a Dr. would ask is if you are sexually active. The answer to this question will really narrow down the possible suspects. If you are sexually active and the clot was fibrous (like it was kinda flat and felt a little like a soggy piece of cloth) and it was preceded by your period being quite late or maybe even missing one, you may have had a miscarriage. If very early in a pregnancy, often no further treatment is needed, but some will need a DNC to completely remove the remaining tissue. If you aren't sexually active then Menstrual color and heaviness varying, especially in your case where you say your periods are usually "crazy," isn't weird. But I would venture that very large clots are. As you said. You SHOULD see a doctor. I would guess the reason you are on Yahoo! Answers is because you are young and don't want to have to involve your parents and get an appointment. Just do it. They love you and want you healthy. Sure, if you are active there may be some consequences, but if there is a serious problem and you leave it untreated, you could be facing serious health and/or fertility issues in the future.

That mucousy substance you are talking about is the lining that is being shed from the uterus whenever you have your period every month. This is normal but if it gets bigger than the size of a quarter and you are having to replace your cup a lot in an hour then I would recommend getting in touch with your dr.

Is it a darkish red? If yes, this is ok, any other color such as gray for example get in touch with your dr.
