It means you only ever ask or answer in one catagory. It's secretly an insult.

Apparently not. Not sure how I feel about this new item. Should everyone ignore someones answers if they are not a "Top Contributor"? Not sure I like sure I like another tag put on us as we already have levels and points. I haven't discovered how Top Contributor is awarded so I am holding off on forming an opinion as of yet. I'm so confused with the new changes.

the Yamster says:
A Top Contributor is an Answerer whose Q&A shows that they are knowledgeable in a specific category. You can become a top contributor in up to three categories. The better your contributions are in any respective category, the more likely you'll become a Top Contributor for that category.
We basically take an Answerer's overall contributions on Answers in each individual category, toss them into a hamster wheel, and the ones that manage to stay on the wheel become Top Contributers.
Good luck!

The more you answer in a particular category, and the more Best Answers you get (not the percentage) the more likely you are to get a "top contributor" badge next to your name, up to 3 categories. Levels, and points have nothing to do with it. I have it for answering in Yahoo 360 and Yahoo Answers categories, neither of which am I on the leaderboard, but I have been answering alot of questions in these categories recently. I do lead the category DIY and I do not have "top contributor" for that category, but I haven't answered much in that one for a while.

Yes I am. I thought I was the only one, and I would be under a lot of pressure to be brilliant, and that's not going to happen. It might eliminate a lot of the yes..no answers. I think yahoo answers are trying. Let's see what it means.
