Yes, sometimes it is. Making good contacts in life that can help you along cannot be under-rated. Doesn't mean that we have to suck up to them though. My philosophy: Don't ask, don't get. Generally, the worst I hear is a "no" if someone is unable to help me out.

I had a friend that once told me... "you know there are times when counting your contacts seems like hell". and yes, I have experienced that... I have too many contacts (that doesn't mean friends, but people who "know" me)... And it helped me many times (including with my jobs...) , but there are also times when this becomes a burden.
also, there is a book entitled "The lords / gentlemen of the mind". It was a survey about how the intellectuals circles in Europe still preserve a "traditional" (that's how the author called this) way to treat... contacts. Many times you need to be "recognized" by the members of a group in order to exist, no matter how smart you are. It's like this... someone from there appreciates you and this automatically means you're good, as if you were born for this. And all the members are "chosen" to be there, they help only "chosen" people like them. It still functions in literature... when you kick someone's a$$ in an article, all the members of the group react against you. Of course, you can make your own way if you are smart enough, but you also need to be "known" by someone important in order to make through...

Yes, I do....

I work in a field that is constantly in competition with other places....esp. in this small town....

I work in a motel...& there are like motels/hotels on almost every corner in this town...so we have to be on our toes when it comes to our services....or we are going to be shut out by the big dogs....we are privately owned...not Corperate...

We have ALOT of the BIG contracts in this town....like the Texas World Speedway....Texas A&M....Porsche Club...Fire Schools.....that is just a few of the contracts we have...BUT...ALOT of the motels/hotels in this town are going for them.

We have done right by these groups, so they are loyal to us....we get ALOT of our business through their word of mouth...recommendation....& advertising....since we have these ties like this....we have people making reservations for wks at a time that from places as far away as London....Sweden....& once Alaska....

So, in ALOT of ways...it is who you know...& HOW you conduct yourself that makes the difference....

If you ever come to TX....Bryan/College Station....come look us up....lol....

No, I think it's "Who I am" that makes a difference.
