The cause of Napoleon's death has been disputed on a number of occasions. Francesco Antommarchi, Napoleon's personal physician, gave stomach cancer as a reason for Napoleon's death in his death certificate. In the later half of the twentieth century, a different theory arose conjecturing that Napoleon was the victim of arsenic poisoning.

Scientists have dealt a major blow to conspiracy theorists and those who maintain that Napoleon Bonaparte was murdered.

For years the controversy has raged about his being killed - either by French Royalists or the British - and all have pointed to the high levels of arsenic in the emperor's body as being evidence of such dastardly behaviour.

However, while recent tests on strands of the emperor's hair have shown arsenic in his body, they prove that is not what killed him.

He died in exile on the island of St. Helena. There was talk of poisoning at the time, but a recent investigation concluded that based on the symptoms he'd been showing, he had intestinal cancer of some type. He had had stomach problems for years, and his father had died of a similar type of cancer.
